2010-2011

Every month the book club reads and discusses a book over sandwiches, pop and ice cream. Check this page each month to find out what the library book club is reading. Of course you will find these books on the shelves after the book club is done with them. Come in and check them out. There is still room for a few more club members so drop by and see us.

November: Feed. M. T. Anderson

Comments:

It was slow to get going but then it became much more interesting.

I wanted to throw the book against the wall.

I found the book to be very similar to Brave New World and other dystopian books.

I liked the fact that the main character was a little ambiguous.

Average Rating: 4

December: The Brief History of the Dead Kevin Brockmeier

Comments:

I liked it but it was uneven.

It was an interesting concept.

I enjoyed the writing even when the story bogged down in details.

Average rating: 7

January: The Sentimentalists Johanna Skibsrud

Comments:

I found the book to be pointless and without plot.

I got lost in the middle but liked the end.

I enjoyed the imagery but felt that I missed parts of the book.

I liked the feeling of sadness and loss that pervaded the story.

Average rating: 5 (this rating is skewed by Mr Sanderson’s high rating. Most of the us were lukewarm if not not downright hostile towards the book.)

February: Will Grayson, Will Grayson. John Green and David Levithan

Comments:

I really liked the book, it is my favourite so far.

I liked the character Tiny the best. He was funny and amusing.

The book was a quick read and very entertaining.

This book was sooo much better that the last one.

Average rating: 8.

March: Room by Emma Donoghue

Comments:

I enjoyed the book it isn’t a book that will stay with me.

I liked the beginning more that the end.

I felt that the book’s main character was interesting.

I never felt any emotional attachment to any of the characters.

The attempt to show us the story through the eyes of a 5 years old wasn’t always successful.

Average Rating: 7

April: A Thousand Cuts by Simon Lelic

Comments:

I really enjoyed this book.

It took me a while to get into it but then I enjoyed it.

I didn’t like to book at all.

I thought that the characters were a bit cliché.

I thought it was interesting how the book didn’t focus on the shooting but rather the motives and consequences.

Average rating: 8

May: Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis

I liked this book, I found it entertaining.

I found the book to be too earnest and the jokes lame and obvious.

I didn’t really understand the political aspects of the book so I didn’t enjoy it.

I didn’t like the narrator but I liked the other main character, Angus

Average Rating: 7
